Plas Gwynant Residential
A residential at Plas Gwnant gives pupils the opportunity to grow in confidence, independence and resilience in a supportive outdoor environment. Throughout the stay, children take part in a range of challenging activities that encourage teamwork, problem-solving and perseverance. Being away from home helps pupils develop independence, while shared experiences strengthen friendships and build trust. The residential supports personal development as well as social and emotional skills, helping children return to school more confident and self-assured.
Mountain Walk
The mountain walk allows pupils to explore the landscape while challenging themselves physically and mentally. Children learn how to move safely across uneven ground, follow routes and support one another as a group. Along the way, they develop stamina and determination while enjoying fresh air and stunning views. Reaching higher ground gives pupils a strong sense of achievement and helps them realise what they can accomplish through effort and teamwork.
"The walk was tiring, but once you see the summit it's worth it for the view - it was amazing! Coming down was really easy afterwards."
Gorge Walking
Gorge walking involves moving through narrow river gorges by climbing, scrambling and wading through water. Pupils develop balance, co-ordination and resilience as they navigate rocky terrain and flowing water. The activity encourages children to support one another, communicate clearly and remain focused. Gorge walking helps pupils push beyond their comfort zone while building confidence and teamwork in a memorable outdoor setting.
"Gorge walking was fun - the pressure of the water and getting your feet in the right place was an adventure!"
Abseiling and Rock Climbing
Abseiling and rock climbing challenge pupils both physically and mentally. While climbing, pupils plan their moves, problem-solve and build determination as they make their way upwards. Abseiling encourages pupils to manage fear, stay calm and trust their equipment and instructors as they descend safely. These activities help children develop resilience, concentration and self-belief, while classmates encourage and celebrate each other’s successes.
"We really had to concentrate to learn how to use the safety equipment, as we needed to make sure we used the clips right. Then, when we were used to it, it was so much FUN! Abseiling was a strange feeling, we had to learn to relax, lean back and trust ourselves!"
Canoeing
Canoeing gives pupils the chance to work together on the water while developing coordination, communication and teamwork. Children learn how to paddle safely, steer the canoe and respond to instructions as a pair or small group. The activity encourages cooperation, as pupils must work in time with one another to move effectively across the water. Canoeing builds confidence and resilience while allowing pupils to enjoy the outdoors in a calm yet challenging environment.
"Canoeing was great exercise and relaxing - we also got to have some fun in the water!"
