Reading
Subject Intent
Rationale
At Lyng Primary, we believe that all pupils can achieve in Reading, both for pleasure and in their comprehension and understanding. It is a skill which affects written communication across the curriculum; children must be able to read with ease and fluency and show a deep understanding of what they have read so that they can progress in every area across the curriculum. Therefore it is vital that we thoroughly teach our children the skills of reading so that they have secure knowledge and understanding in all areas.
We are also aware of how regular reading has a positive effect on future life chances. To give our pupils the best start to their lives, we want to instill a love of reading that will follow them throughout their lives and raise their aspirations.
For all the children of Lyng Primary School to be fluent readers with a deep understanding and a love of reading. Our intent is that we:
- Ensure pupils read easily, fluently and with good understanding

- Instill a love of reading for life
Subject Policy
Learning Outside the Classroom and Reading
Children often find real enjoyment in reading, especially when it takes place beyond the traditional classroom setting. Reading in spaces such as the school library, on the field, within a forest school environment, or in an outdoor classroom can transform it from a structured task into a more relaxing and personal experience. These alternative settings can support mental wellbeing, reduce pressure, and help children engage more deeply with stories. Being able to read in varied environments encourages immersion, sparks imagination, and allows them to momentarily escape into another world while still remaining part of the school day.
Year 2
Year 5
We used our new library as the ideal location to recommend books to our peers.
We chose a book, which we had already read, in order to write a book review.
We then shared our recommendations with our partner.
'The new library was an ideal place for us to do book reviews. It helped me when using my next book because my friend had already recommended it to me.'
Year 6
Year 6 were defending different authors. To do this, they went out into our forest school and read sections from a range of stories.
In each story, the author had used figurative language and we had to copy down examples. Then we shared why we thought the author had chosen to use this language.
'Being outside helped me to think more freely and gave me ideas to help me answer the questions.'
'Being in the fresh air and open space with nature helped me to think like an author.'
